Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman is the third daughter of their family. Her father was a carnival barker, passed away as a young girl, requiring her mother to support her family through work as waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth went to school and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. Following only two school years she left for an acting profession. She faced many obstacles on her path to success. Then, in New York she was hired to pose for photos in a crime magazine, but no theatrical job opportunities came up. When she was employed as a hat-check woman in a nightclub she quit and returned to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a steady actor. The company paid her performing during the daytime in the ushering department. She earned a bachelor's diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
